One thing, that helps in live is to “embrace failure”. The next step is the most relevant: how do you deal with failure? A post mortem or a retrospective seems appropriate, right? And yes this is a good start!

A blameless post mortem is even better. And first checking for psychological safety before running a retro is also much better.

RACI #

One of the more confusing aspects of Project Management is the differentiation of Accountability and Responsibility. Especially in Germany this often leads to failure in communication as there are no really proper translations.

Person, die „responsible“ für eine Aufgabe ist, beschäftigt sich aktiv mit deren Durchführung. Wichtige Entscheidungen zur Erledigung der Aufgabe übernimmt der/die Accountable.

  • R = Responsible (also recommender) Those who complete the task. There is at least one role with a participation type of responsible, although others can be delegated to assist in the work required.
  • A = Accountable (also approver or final approving authority) The one ultimately answerable for the correct and thorough completion of the deliverable or task, the one who ensures the prerequisites of the task are met and who delegates the work to those responsible. In other words, an accountable must sign off (approve) work that responsible provides. There must be only one accountable specified for each task or deliverable.
  • C = Consulted (sometimes consultant or counsel) Those whose opinions are sought, typically subject-matter experts, and with whom there is two-way communication.
  • I = Informed (also informee) Those who are kept up-to-date on progress, often only on completion of the task or deliverable, and with whom there is just one-way communication.

Scrum #

Although Scrum was first used to describe Agile content in 1986 in the Harvard Business Review, the term originates from the internationally loved sport, rugby. In rugby, a “scrum” involves players huddling closely together with their heads down while trying to gain possession of the ball. Then, the players work together in order to achieve their shared goal: to get the ball across the line and score!

Lean #

At Spotify, teams are broken down into what they call Squads. A Squad is like a Scrum Team and is supposed to feel like its own start-up within the company. Squads are self-organizing and collocated. They work together to achieve a long-term mission. At Spotify, a Squad may be in charge of a task such as improving the app’s usability for Android, improving the Spotify radio experience, or providing payment solutions. Just like a Scrum Team, the Squad doesn’t have a formal leader, but they do have a Product Owner. Product Owners collaborate with one another to maintain a roadmap to track Spotify’s progress as a whole. Each team also has access to an Agile coach to encourage continuous improvements. Tribes are collections of squads that work in a specific area and are meant to have less than 100 people. Chapters are small groups of people across a tribe that have similar skills and work in the same general competency area. Guilds are the largest group, comprised of people across the organization who want to share knowledge, tools, code, and practices.

VUCA #

“VUCA” ist ein Akronym, das sich auf “volatility” (“Volatilität”), “uncertainty” (“Unsicherheit”), “complexity” (“Komplexität”) und “ambiguity” (“Mehrdeutigkeit”) bezieht. Damit werden vermeintliche Merkmale der modernen Welt beschrieben.

Nach Ansicht einiger Führungskräfte und Unternehmensberatungen ist die Antwort auf VUCA wiederum VUCA. Dieses Mal stehen die Buchstaben für “vision” (“Vision”), “understanding” (“Verstehen”), “clarity” (“Klarheit”) und “agility” (“Agilität”). Damit wird der negativen Sichtweise eine positive gegenübergestellt, wobei beiden eine gewisse Vereinfachung innewohnt.

Risk #

Most risk management guidelines recognize at least four types of strategy in responding to identified risks. Hillson (1999a, 1999b) defines risk response strategy types as:

  • Avoid—seeking to eliminate uncertainty
  • Transfer—passing ownership and/or liability to a third party
  • Mitigate—reducing the probability and/or severity of the risk below a threshold of acceptability *Accept—recognizing residual risks and devising responses to control and monitor them

The commonly used risk standards and guidelines adopt identical or similar sets of strategies, with minor variations in terminology
